SAG Mill Finite Element Analysis
The mining industry uses semi-autogeneous grinding (SAG) mills for ore size reduction. With diameters approaching 40’ and drive torques exceeding 15,000,000 ft-lbs, these machines are quite large and powerful. Due to the size, expense, and critical nature of this equipment, detailed finite element analysis (FEA) is a normal part of the design phase. The client’s analyses were typically performed by specialists using purpose-built algorithms and routines. This impeded design workflow and increased engineering time.
Tripod Innovation worked with the client to develop and verify alternate modeling and analysis techniques. These new stress analysis methods greatly reduced front-end mathematical complexity and provided more overall flexibility. The results were audited and compared favorably with both strain gage data and historical analyses.
Now, the client is able to perform SAG mill analysis using a broader spectrum of in-house engineers on commercially available platforms. The result is a streamlined design process, reduced engineering costs, and greater opportunities for innovation.
